CanopyBloomington begins 2025 stronger, more focused and ambitious than ever! Canopy’s resolution for 2025 is to be even more impactful for our own Tree City, USA and we cannot do any of this without YOU! This blog will review all of the opportunities for you to get involved with Canopy in 2025 and potentially cross off some resolutions like getting more involved with your community, participating in a tree planting, or even just trying out something new.
Grow the tree canopy in Bloomington by planting trees!
Canopy’s spring plantings begin in March with the first stage of its ‘Cool Corridors Project’, a collaboration with the City of Bloomington to plant and maintain over 100 trees in the Crestmont and Walnut Woods neighborhoods to fight extreme heat. Canopy will also be planting in the Broadview, Grandview Hills and Arden Place neighborhoods in the spring, with another four to five neighborhoods being reviewed for the fall. Native city trees will grow to shade sidewalks, help cool the neighborhoods, improve the air quality and quality of life for their residents.

Expand your knowledge of trees in Bloomington!
Canopy will be expanding our educational programs by bringing back organized tree walks throughout the spring and summer months, hosting public educational programs at the Downtown Monroe County Public Library with TREES 101, and expanding our Youth Tree Tenders program.

Become more involved in the tree canopy in your community!
A new education and conservation initiative being developed is the addition of Neighborhood Tree Captains, for which Canopy will train select residents on tree care best practices and enlist them as partners. These Tree Captains will report monthly on the Canopy-planted trees in their neighborhoods and become a critical link to the long-term success of growing our urban forests together. If your neighborhood has planted trees with us and you or someone you know would be a good candidate for this role, sign up on our website here!
Come visit us at the Bloomington Farmers Market!
We will also be staffing informational tables regularly at the Bloomington Farmers Market and other events beginning in January. If you have an event where you would like us to be present, please let us know and we will see if we are able.

Bottomline, we want to continue to build relationships and community around our urban forest initiatives. The work we are doing together matters! To quote Canopy’s Executive Director, Ava Hartman, “we love working with residents to strengthen communities as we create a healthier, leafier City together.”
