The City of Bloomington has been recognized as Indiana's First Tree City USA by the

National Arbor Day Foundation since 1984 and is home to a thriving urban forest that enhances the beauty, health, and sustainability of our community. CanopyBloomington is a non-profit organization which plants native trees with residents, strives to influence tree policy, and promotes community awareness, education, stewardship, and celebration of the urban forest that supports the environmental, social, and economic well-being of the Bloomington community. We are able to plant trees on private property with resident approval where a lot of Bloomington's tree loss occurred due to development.

Since 2021, CanopyBloomington has planted over 800 trees with 400+ volunteers that shade our community members and provide all of the benefits listed above. We have worked with 19 neighborhoods, 8 schools, and 7 not-for-profits to plant trees to enhance the beauty, health, and sustainability of our community. The urban forest provides essential benefits by shading homes, reducing stormwater runoff and flooding, improving air quality, and creating welcoming public spaces for residents and visitors. It also strengthens our connection to nature and reminds us of our shared responsibility to care for and protect the environment for current and future generations.

CanopyBloomington turned 5 years old this year and we are celebrating with a week full of events ending on Saturday, October 24th with a tree planting and a movie showing. October 24th has been declared CanopyBloomington Day by the City of Bloomington to recognize the work that Canopy has done in the community since our incorporation in 2021.

Oaks in the Fall Tree Walk

Feel the breeze and botanize with Sycamore Land Trust and CanopyBloomington during Oaks in the Fall at Amy Weingartner Branigin Peninsula Preserve! We’ll focus on oak identification, learning how to recognize different species by their leaves, bark, and habitat while discussing their role as keystone species that support countless birds, insects, and wildlife. CanopyBloomington’s work to grow and care for Bloomington’s urban forest pairs perfectly with Sycamore’s efforts to protect and restore natural areas across the region, highlighting how urban and wild forests function as one connected, thriving system!

Join us for our Oaks in the Fall Tree Walk. All ages are welcome.

Maple Heights Tree Planting:

Grab a friend and a shovel and join CanopyBloomingtonto plant trees in Maple Heights, the second neighborhood Canopy worked with as we started 5 years ago.

On April 16th, 2022, CanopyBloomington planted 20 trees in Maple Heights neighborhood. This fall, in celebration of CanopyBloomington Day, we will plant an additional 20 trees in and around the neighborhood with residents, volunteers, and Canopy board members.

We are so grateful for everyone neighborhood and community partner we have worked with to plant trees around Bloomington. THANK YOU to everyone who has believed in and supported Canopy to get us to today.

Our volunteer spots are filled--thank you to all of our volunteers!
